Delete your Google Maps Timeline (location history)
Since Timeline is stored on your phone, you delete it in the Google Maps app on each device – and separately in backups. Deleting is permanent, so export a copy first if you might need it.

Before you delete: keep a copy?
Trips abroad for an application, a mileage claim, or simply memories: once deleted, Timeline data can't be recovered. Exporting takes a minute – see export your location history.
Delete one day or one visit
- Google Maps › profile picture › Your Timeline.
- Tap Today, swipe the calendar and tap the day.
- Tap ⋮ More › Delete day › Delete. To remove a single visit, tap ⋮ next to it › Remove.
Delete a date range or everything
- Google Maps › Your Timeline › ⋮ More › Location & privacy settings.
- Under Location settings tap Delete range of Timeline data or Delete all Timeline data.
- Follow the on-screen steps.
Auto-delete
In the same settings, Auto-delete Timeline data removes data older than 3, 18 or 36 months. Note that Google requires auto-delete to be off if you want encrypted backups.
Other devices, backups and other location data
- Deleting on one phone doesn't delete the Timeline on your other devices – repeat it there.
- Backups are separate: Your Timeline › cloud icon › select the device › ⋮ › Delete. Google's help also offers deleting backups for all devices from My Google Activity.
- Other settings such as Web & App Activity or Search history, and photo geotags, can hold location information too; manage those in your Google Account.
- A factory reset (or, on iPhone, deleting Google Maps) removes the Timeline stored on that device.
See your history on a big screen. Trackmere opens Android Timeline.json, iPhone location-history.json and older Google Takeout files in your browser: map, day-by-day timeline, places, distances, days per country, and export to Excel, CSV, GPX, KML or GeoJSON. Your locations never leave your computer. The map, days, places and days-per-country are free; exports are free for 31 days of data, and a $12 lifetime license covers all of it.
Questions and answers
Can I delete Timeline from a computer?
Google's help says you can turn off or delete all your Timeline for your account in My Google Activity; deleting parts of it needs the Maps app on the phone.
Can deleted Timeline data be recovered?
No. Only a backup made before the deletion or a file you exported earlier still has it.
Does turning Timeline off delete it?
Not by itself. Choose "Turn off and delete activity" to do both.
