Build a mileage log from your Google Maps Timeline

If you forgot to log business driving, your Timeline may hold the trips: date, start, destination and distance. It's a good starting point for a mileage log you then review.

Get the trips into a spreadsheet

  1. Export your Timeline from the phone (and older Takeout files if needed).
  2. Open them in Trackmere. Each day shows visits and the journeys between them with the travel mode Google detected and the distance.
  3. Export the Excel workbook or timeline CSV – one row per visit/journey with times and distances.
  4. In Excel, filter to driving journeys, add a Purpose column, and mark business trips.

Check before you claim

  • Travel mode is detected automatically and can be wrong (car vs bus vs taxi).
  • Distances come from the recorded path and can differ from odometer or route-planner distances.
  • Tax authorities often require a log with the business purpose of each trip and may expect it to be kept at the time – check your local rules (e.g. IRS Publication 463 in the US, HMRC guidance in the UK).

Going forward

Export your Timeline monthly and keep the file with your accounts, or keep a simple log alongside it.

See your history on a big screen. Trackmere opens Android Timeline.json, iPhone location-history.json and older Google Takeout files in your browser: map, day-by-day timeline, places, distances, days per country, and export to Excel, CSV, GPX, KML or GeoJSON. Your locations never leave your computer. The map, days, places and days-per-country are free; exports are free for 31 days of data, and a $12 lifetime license covers all of it.
