Open your Google Takeout Location History

Before Timeline moved to phones, Google Takeout delivered your history as a folder called Location History (Timeline): a big Records.json with raw points and a Semantic Location History folder with one file per month.

Open Trackmere – free

Open the zip as it is

  1. Open Trackmere → Open files → choose takeout-….zip (several zip parts can be chosen together).
  2. Trackmere looks inside for the location files and skips everything else in the archive.
  3. Already unzipped? Use Open an unzipped Takeout folder.

The files

FileWhat it containsIn Trackmere
Records.jsonEvery recorded position: latitudeE7/longitudeE7, time, accuracyPoints, heatmap; stays detected automatically (marked estimated)
Semantic Location History/YYYY/YYYY_MONTH.jsonplaceVisit (with name and address) and activitySegment (mode, distance)Visits with names, journeys, distances
Settings.json, Timeline Edits.jsonSettings and your edits – no positionsExplained and skipped

Typical problems Trackmere handles

  • Records.json files of a gigabyte or more (read in pieces, not all at once)
  • Negative coordinates stored as large positive numbers in some exports (fixed automatically)
  • Old timestampMs and newer timestamp fields, visits with only centerLatE7
  • The same days in several files (merged)

Questions and answers

My Takeout has no Location History folder – why?

Newer Takeout exports often no longer contain Timeline, because it now lives on your phone. Export it from the phone instead (see this guide).

Can I combine Takeout and phone exports?

Yes. Choose all files together; overlapping days are merged.
